Speedy Guacamole Toast Bites

  • Author: David
  • Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • Ripe Avocados (3 large): The heart of our guacamole, providing creamy texture and healthy fats. Choose avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure.
  • Lime Juice (2 tablespoons, fresh): Brightens the flavor of the guacamole and prevents browning. Freshly squeezed is always best for optimal taste.
  • Red Onion (¼ cup, finely diced): Adds a sharp, pungent bite and a bit of crunch. Finely dicing ensures even distribution and flavor.
  • Cilantro (¼ cup, chopped): Brings a fresh, herbaceous note that’s essential to authentic guacamole flavor. Fresh cilantro is key for the best taste.
  • Roma Tomato (1 medium, diced): Adds sweetness, juiciness, and a vibrant red color. Roma tomatoes are less watery and hold their shape well.
  • Jalapeño (1 small, seeded and minced, optional): Provides a touch of heat for those who like a little spice. Adjust the amount to your preference or omit for a mild version.
  • Salt (½ teaspoon, or to taste): Enhances all the flavors and balances the acidity of the lime juice. Sea salt or kosher salt are great options.
  • Black Pepper (¼ teaspoon, or to taste): Adds a subtle warmth and depth of flavor. Freshly ground black pepper is recommended.
  • Whole Wheat Bread or Baguette (1 loaf or baguette): Provides a sturdy and healthy base for the guacamole. Choose your favorite type of bread for toasting.
  • Olive Oil (for brushing bread, optional): Adds a touch of richness and helps the bread crisp up beautifully when toasted. Extra virgin olive oil is ideal for its flavor.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Avocados: Begin by halving the avocados lengthwise, removing the pits, and scooping the flesh into a medium-sized bowl.
  2. Mash the Avocados: Using a fork, gently mash the avocado to your desired consistency. Some people prefer a completely smooth guacamole, while others like it chunkier. Aim for a texture that’s easily spreadable but still has some body.
  3. Add Lime Juice: Immediately squeeze the fresh lime juice over the mashed avocado. This not only brightens the flavor but also helps prevent the guacamole from browning. Stir to combine.
  4. Incorporate Vegetables: Add the finely diced red onion, chopped cilantro, and diced Roma tomato to the bowl. If you’re using jalapeño for a spicy kick, add the minced, seeded jalapeño at this stage as well.
  5. Season and Mix: Season the guacamole with salt and black pepper. Start with the recommended amounts and adjust to your taste. Gently mix all the ingredients together until they are well combined and evenly distributed. Be careful not to overmix, as you want to maintain some texture.
  6. Taste and Adjust: Give your guacamole a taste test. Adjust the seasoning as needed. You might want to add a little more lime juice for extra tang, more salt for flavor, or more jalapeño for heat. This is your chance to customize it to your perfect taste.
  7. Prepare the Bread: While you’re making the guacamole, prepare your bread. Slice the whole wheat bread into your desired bite-sized shapes. You can make squares, rectangles, or triangles. If using a baguette, slice it into rounds.
  8. Toast the Bread (Optional but Recommended): For extra flavor and texture, lightly toast the bread slices. You can do this in a toaster, toaster oven, or under the broiler. For a richer flavor, you can brush the bread lightly with olive oil before toasting. Toast until lightly golden and crispy.
  9. Assemble the Guacamole Toast Bites: Once the toast is slightly cooled, spoon or spread a generous amount of guacamole onto each piece of toast.
  10. Serve Immediately: For the best flavor and texture, serve your Speedy Guacamole Toast Bites immediately. Garnish with extra cilantro sprigs, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes, or a lime wedge for an extra touch, if desired. Enjoy!
