  • Author: David

Ingredients

To prepare Jeera Rice, youโ€™ll need a few basic ingredients that are readily available in most kitchens:

  • Basmati Riceย โ€“ 1 cup
  • Waterย โ€“ 2 cups
  • Cumin Seeds (Jeera)ย โ€“ 1 tablespoon
  • Ghee or Oilย โ€“ 2 tablespoons
  • Saltย โ€“ to taste
  • Bay Leafย โ€“ 1 (optional)
  • Cinnamon Stickย โ€“ 1 small piece (optional)
  • Clovesย โ€“ 2 (optional)
  • Green Cardamom Podsย โ€“ 2 (optional)
  • Fresh Coriander Leavesย โ€“ for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Creating Jeera Rice is a straightforward process that involves a few simple steps. Follow this guide to make a perfect batch of Jeera Rice:

  1. Rinse the Rice:
    • Begin by rinsing the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.
  2. Soak the Rice:
    • Soak the rinsed rice in water for approximately 30 minutes. This step ensures that the rice cooks evenly and results in long, fluffy grains.
  3. Heat the Ghee or Oil:
    • In a large pan or pot, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the cumin seeds and allow them to sizzle until they turn golden brown and release their aroma.
  4. Add Whole Spices (Optional):
    • If using, add the bay leaf, cinnamon stick, cloves, and cardamom pods to the pan. Sautรฉ for a minute to infuse the oil with their flavors.
  5. Incorporate the Rice:
    • Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pan. Stir gently to coat the rice with the ghee and spices.
  6. Add Water and Salt:
    • Pour in the water and add salt to taste. Stir the mixture and bring it to a boil.
  7. Cook the Rice:
    • Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and all the water is absorbed.
  8. Fluff and Garnish:
    • Turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for another 5 minutes. Gently fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with fresh coriander leaves, if desired.
